Telematics without GPS

A city wanted fleet telematics without tracking where its staff go. We delivered it with GPS location tracking turned off.

470Telematics devices installed
49Solar asset trackers
12Underused vehicles no longer needed
~$500kFuture purchases avoided (the City's estimate)

The problem

The City's privacy requirements ruled out GPS location tracking, which most of a telematics program's value normally depends on. It still needed utilization data good enough to make fleet decisions.

What I did

  • Embedded from the start as success management lead: the primary liaison between the City and us, coordinating with Geotab's design and engineering teams.
  • Ran the rollout of 470 devices and 49 solar asset trackers with location tracking off throughout.
  • Brought single sign-on live, fed the data into the City's own reporting through Geotab's Data Connector, and started an integration with its asset management system.
  • Run quarterly business reviews and track the program's KPIs.

The result

The City's own success plan credits the program with eliminating the need for 12 underused vehicles, avoiding about $500,000 in future purchases.
